Chat vs Cowork: what’s the difference?
Same app, same home screen, same message box. Both reach your Gmail, Calendar, files and tools. The difference is not power. It is how you work: you steer Chat, you delegate to Cowork.
Steer it, or hand it over
Chat
You steer, turn by turn.
A conversation. You ask, it answers, you ask again.
Reach for it when- You have a quick question.
- You are thinking something through.
- You want a draft, fast.
Like asking a sharp colleague at their desk.
Cowork
You delegate, then step away.
Describe the finished thing. It works across your files and tools, and you come back to a result.
Reach for it when- The job spans many files or sources.
- It should keep running while you do something else.
- You would rather manage the outcome than the keystrokes.
Like handing a job to a capable employee.
One home, one message box
Since August 2026, Chat and Cowork share one home.
You do not open a different app or a different tab.
- Want to hand a job over? Select Cowork, bottom left of the message box.
- Want a conversation back? Select Chat.
- On the desktop app, Cowork reads and writes the files in a folder you connect.
- On the web or your phone, it runs in the cloud: start the task, get told when it needs you, review the result.
Scheduled tasks run in the cloud too, so your computer can be off.

Two kinds of project, one word
This one catches nearly everyone. Chat has projects. Cowork has projects. They are not the same thing.
The tell
A Chat project holds files you upload and lives in your account. A Cowork project is a workspace for tasks. Start one from scratch and it syncs the same way. Build one from a folder on your computer and it stays on that computer.
If Claude cannot see the files on your computer, nothing is broken. You are in a project with no folder attached.
Vanished after a plan change or a new computer?
The app lost the link, not the folder. Create a new Cowork project, choose Use an existing folder, and point it at the same folder. Keep working folders in OneDrive or iCloud and the files follow you too.

Your project is a library, not a folder
A project is not somewhere to drop a file. It is a library Claude reads from, and both kinds work this way.
About 500 pages on the standard window. The newest models hold five times that in one conversation, on every paid plan.
When a project outgrows the desk, Claude searches it and pulls the pages your question needs.

So load it up
Past examples, spreadsheets, PDFs, notes. Most people give it two pages and wonder why it feels generic. Give it the library.
One question to decide
Ask yourself: am I doing this with it, or handing it over? With it, turn by turn, is Chat. Handing the whole job over is Cowork.
